Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Community Unit School District #5 Board Petitions Available

Nominating petitions for the April 9, 2013 school board election for the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Community Unit School District #5 are available. Forms may be obtained in the office of the Board secretary at 307 N. Sangamon Ave., Gibson City on any business day between 8:00am and 4:00pm.

Please note that our office will be closed on Wednesday, November 21 through Friday, November 23 in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday. A school board candidate’s petition must be filed in the same office no earlier than 8:00am on Monday, December 17, 2012 and no later than 5:00pm on Monday, December 24, 2012. Candidates’ names will appear on the election ballot in the order in which their nominating petitions are received in the secretary’s office.

Five seats on the seven-member board of education will be filled at the April election. Four seats are full four year terms or until April 2017. One seat is a two year term or until April 2015.

To be eligible to serve, a school board member must be on the date of the election, a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old, be a resident of the State of Illinois and the school district for at least one year immediately preceding the election and be a registered voter.

Elections are non-partisan and board candidates are not required to indicate a political party affiliation. Candidates should be aware of financial conflict-of-interest limitations set forth in the School Code.

Nominating papers may be filed by the candidate in person, by mail or by an agent.
The nominating papers must consist of nominating petitions signed by at least 50 voters residing within the district with petitions to be secured bound together with pages numbered consecutively and each page must carry the notarized signature of the petition circulator.

The papers must also include a state of candidacy, which includes a request that the candidate’s name be placed on the official ballot, the address of the candidate, and the office sought and a statement that the candidate is qualified for the office and has filed or will file before the close of the petition filing period a statement of economic interest as required by the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act.

A receipt from the county clerk showing that the candidate has filed the statement of economic interest as noted above must also be included.
